In 2003 Serious Business was founded in Pitesti by two young and enthusiastic associates, with the mission of providing written translation services to local Romanian companies. Quickly the company opened a subsidiary in Romania's capital, Bucharest and during the following years in several other counties.
In 2005, the company's Quality Management System obtained ISO 9001 certification and since then held annual audits with no disruption to its global exposure. On the brink of Romania's accession to the EU, Serious Business delivered its customized translation solutions to its first international customers including the European Commission and the Translation Centre of the Bodies of European Union.
In 2008 we launched MEMOrg - the first online Computer-Assisted Translation software designed in Romania. Nowadays, MEMOrg contains a suite of specialized tools for freelance translators, including a translation memory, dictionary, directory, wordcount and articles.
By now, multiple multi-language translation projects were successfully completed and the company's service portfolio was expanded with multimedia subtitling and business interpreting. Around 100 employees were employed since the foundation of the company.
After the financial crisis, the company's associates decided to split paths and since 2011 the company is privately owned by Nicolae Marinescu as sole shareholder. At the same time, the company's vision expanded to target western European enterprises, whilst decreasing production costs by outsourcing the main part of the phase-one translation to carefully recruited freelance translators.
The company's Intranet has seen spectacular internal software development, being ahead of all commercial Translation Management Solutions. To date, the Intranet is a continuously improved cornerstone and offers our employees, translation partners and customers a pleiad of unparalleled features for document transfer and archiving, business communication, translation workflow, international recruiting and document conversion.
Our eTranslator outsourcing platform has been streamlined, leading to improved translator recruitment and the rigorous application of proprietary dynamic ranking system for translators, revisers, and desktop publishers. More than 5,000 translators from Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Romania, and Poland have been filtered by our selection procedure, which consistenly includes at least one test job. More than 300 service agreements and NDAs have been signed with trusted translation partners.
By this date, Serious Business became a solid brand recognized by almost 1,000 corporate customers in the European Union and North America. The partnership with many of our customers has lasted for more than a decade, and there are still companies in our portfolio that continuously issued translation projects for thirteen years since 2003, the year of our foundation.
With the 2020 pandemic came a new approach to business processes including WFH for our employees and advanced security enhancements. Serious Business is now ISO 27001:2017 certified and almost all communication and documents are encrypted. On December 31st 2021 our experience has surpassed the limit of 120 million beautifully translated words, literally a truck full of documents.
Until now, Serious Business has been an active member in many professional associations including GALA, ATA, ELIA, and with the explosion of streaming platforms and demand for subtitling services, a proud member of EGA. Our commitment to having long lasting connections with our employees and customers drives us confidently forward into any future challenges.
